Closed Comedones and Whiteheads: What Actually Clears Them

Closed comedones and whiteheads are clogged pores, not surface dirt, which is why scrubbing at them usually makes things worse rather than better. Clearing them takes ingredients that work inside the pore, plus patience.

What actually clears them

  • Salicylic acid (BHA). Oil-soluble, so it can get inside the pore itself rather than just cleaning the surface. See our salicylic acid collection for toners and serums built around it.
  • Gentle retinoid alternatives. Bakuchiol and low-dose retinol help speed up cell turnover, which prevents new clogs from forming as quickly.
  • Consistent, gentle cleansing. Removing sunscreen and makeup thoroughly each night, without over-scrubbing, prevents buildup that leads to new comedones.

What doesn't help, or makes it worse

Physical scrubs, harsh cleansing brushes, and picking or squeezing closed comedones. These either push debris deeper into the pore or cause micro-injuries that lead to inflammation and, potentially, actual acne where there wasn't any before.

A realistic timeline

Because closed comedones form under the skin's surface, most people see improvement over 4 to 8 weeks of consistent BHA use, not overnight. Extracting them professionally can offer an instant fix, but without a supporting routine, new ones will keep forming at the same rate.
