Double cleansing gets recommended as a universal rule in K-beauty, but it isn't always necessary, and doing it when you don't need to can leave dry or sensitive skin feeling stripped.
What double cleansing actually does
An oil or balm cleanser dissolves sunscreen, makeup and sebum, which are oil-based and don't rinse away well with water-based cleansers alone. A second, water-based cleanser then removes sweat, dirt and the residue from the first cleanse. Together, they clean more thoroughly than either step alone.
Who actually needs it daily
- Anyone wearing sunscreen every day, which should be most people, since sunscreen is specifically designed to resist rinsing off with water alone.
- Anyone wearing makeup.
- Oily or acne-prone skin that tends to feel under-cleansed with one step.
Who can skip it
If you didn't wear sunscreen or makeup that day, one gentle cleanse is usually enough, particularly in the morning. Very dry or sensitive skin may also do better with a single, gentler cleanse most days, reserving double cleansing for days with heavier sunscreen or makeup.
Getting it right
Massage the oil or balm cleanser onto completely dry skin first; adding water too early stops it from dissolving oil-based products properly. Rinse, then follow with a gentle foam or gel cleanser. If skin feels tight or stripped afterward, the second cleanser is likely too harsh for daily use.
