What Order to Apply Your Skincare (And Why It Matters)

Layering skincare in the wrong order doesn't just look inefficient, it can genuinely stop products from working properly. The rule is simple once you know it: thinnest to thickest, so each layer can absorb before the next one blocks it.

The general order

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner
  3. Essence (a lighter, more hydrating step than a serum)
  4. Serum or ampoule (your most targeted, active step)
  5. Eye cream
  6. Moisturizer
  7. Sunscreen (morning only, always last)

Why the order matters

A thick cream applied before a watery serum creates a barrier that stops the serum from absorbing properly, wasting the active ingredients you paid for. Sunscreen always goes last in the morning because it needs to sit on top of skin to form its protective layer; layering anything over it, including makeup, works best when you let it set for a minute or two first.

What if you're using multiple serums?

Go from the lightest texture to the heaviest, not by ingredient importance. If two serums are similar in weight, apply the more targeted or expensive one first, since it gets more direct contact with skin. Avoid combining strong actives like retinol and exfoliating acids in the same routine unless you know your skin tolerates both.

Do you need every step, every day?

No. The order matters more than the number of steps. A three-step routine done in the right order works better than a seven-step routine applied haphazardly.
